"So they could be as one"

How can we be as one if everybody perceives differently, values differently, has different point of view.
How can we be as one if everybody managed to build his or her fortress, fenced with the barbed wire, fortified with defense ramparts.
How can we be as one if everybody is just a lonely island separated from the others by the vast seas?
How can we be as one if we miss self-dependence so much, if we defend our freedom so much, if we respect our own opinions so much that we become totally engrossed in them?
All that will last until we get so enchanted with another person, that we'll start to miss different ways of perception, thinking and evaluating, until we decide that he or she brings enrichment not a threat, brings light into our darkness, colors into our grayness, new sounds into our monotony.
And from there it is only one step to what we call tolerance, openness, and respect for another human - for every human.
